Engineers Fighting Depression Shouldnt Go It Alone

Engineers Fighting Depression Shouldnt Go It Alone Engineers Fighting Depression Shouldnt Go It Alone Engineers Fighting Depression Shouldnt Go It AloneA recent Harvard Business Review survey has found that engineers had the second loneliest profession. Lawyers take the lead. The researchers surveyed 1,624 full-time employees. The findings may not come as a big surprise. Engineers spend a lot of time working on their designs in front of their computers. Technology allows them to collaborate and coordinate with colleagues instead of meeting with them face-to-face. Their work environment doesnt always allow them to form friendships with colleagues.Research into the effect of loneliness on health continues to have a negative correlation. For You Creative Approach to Engineering Improves GradesOne in three adults aged 45 and older describe themselves as lonely, according to AARP. About 20 years ago, AARP compared the health risks of prolonged isolation to that of smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Those who are lonely are also likely to be depressed, which also can impair physical and mental health. Depressed people often further isolate themselves from others which leads them to feel even more alone. The link to loneliness and depression can start for engineers even before the take their first job. A 2015 report from the Graduate Assembly at the University of California, Berkeley, found 42 percent to 48 percent of that schools Ph.D. students in science and engineering were depressed.Maybe youve been alone at work so long you dont even realize youre lonely. The polling organization Gallup has created 12 statements that best predict employee and workgroup performance. They include questions likeDoes your supervisor or someone at work landseem to care about you as a person? Is there someone at work who encourages your development?Do your opinions seem to count at work?In the last six months, has someone at work talked to you about your progress? In the last year, have you had opportunities to learn and grow?Do you have a best friend at work?As an indicator of on-the-job loneliness, the last question is particularly important. Engineers need to see their work valued and encouraged. But feeling alone can best be overcome when they have someone to talk to, to bounce ideas off, or vent to.If youre feeling lonely, take time out of your day to reach out to a friend.Admitting to being lonely or depressed to people at work, though, can actually make things worse, according to a 2011 study published by professors from California State University and Wharton School of Business. The admission provided stronger and more negative cues for co-workers about the overall quality of their relationship with the employee. The topic is taboo, said Karen Dolva, cofounder of No Isolation, a Norwegian firm that creates communication tools to help cut down on loneliness. People dont willingly admit to being lonely.Engineers battling depression and loneliness To battle loneliness and depress, experts suggest finding a hobby outside of work, joining Meetup groups, or seek medical help. Will Wright, who founded digital-health-coaching company Pack Health, believes some online interactions, especially with real friends, can help people feel less alone. He tells the story of a particularly rough time for himself, when hed be traveling and away from home and friends for weeks. A friend texted during one of these times and Wright surprised himself by texting back an honest answer Im lonely. The friend said hed been where Wright was right then. Why dont you go for a run? the friend asked, offering a concrete way for Wright to help himself by exercising and getting out of his hotel surroundings. All this happened through texts, Wright said.Engineers can take time out of their days to email, text, and phone friends and family members to feel more connected. The answer is a bit different for Dolva of No Isolation.Loneliness can be tackled by opening up the conversation, D olva said. She doesnt mean speaking about your depression and loneliness to your co-workers, but rather to talk about it with friends and familyeven via technology like Skype or Facetime. You can certainly tell them your job is isolating and leads to depression.I didnt understand how lonely I really was, Dolva said, speaking about her time in UX design and informatics. With loneliness, you dont want to let anyone in. And Im so far from being the only one who feels like this. Were built to be part of a group, to depend on others and have them depend on us.Call the friend and just be bored together. Let people in. When you texas tea on others youre helping yourself, but youre also helping them, Dolva added. Most people, after all, want to be of use. They feel good when theyre helping others. And sharing real feelings encourages friends to open up as well.Theres nothing cool or brave about going through life alone, Dolva said.Jean Thilmany is a freelance writer in St. Paul who frequently writes on engineering topics.Listen to ASME TechCast and learn how to communicate more effectively with your colleagues.Theres nothing cool or brave about going through life alone.Karen Dolva of No Isolation

10 Strategies for Improving Work Life Balance for Dads

10 Strategies for Improving Work Life Balance for Dads10 Strategies for Improving Work Life Balance for DadsMany fathers struggle with the concept and the practice of work-life balance. The many demands that work, family, life in general and rolleal needs place on our time and attention can cause us to feel significantly out of balance. The National Partnership for Women and Families tells us that 64% of American families report that the time pressures on working families are growing, not shrinking, despite all of our efforts to find better work-life balance. And a recent Aon Consulting study suggests that almost 9 out of 10 employees have a hard time balancing work and family. Fathers who have been able to make changes and reach a greater work-life balance status can attribute much of their success to a few key strategies that help them prioritize and manage their time and find ways to keep the many demands on their time in dynamic equilibrium. The ten strategies listed here can help a ny father do a better job of creating a better work-life balance for his own life and for his family. Create a Personal Purpose Statement It can be hard to know what and how to change when life feels out of balance if a person doesnt know what parts of life need the greatest emphasis. The process of creating a personal purpose statement can help a man figure out the important things he needs to be and do.Writing, revising and re-reading a personal purpose statement is a key element in intentionally creating a work-life balance strategy. Complete an Activity Log Almost every time management guru recommends that people create an activity log from time to time to binnensee, in real life, how people use their time. The idea of an activity log is to track on 15 or 30-minute intervals during an entire day how we spend our time and seeing whether our practices align with our priorities. It can seem tedious and like a time waster, but it is an important investment in seeing how we are doing and preparing us for a needed change in how we program our time. Think in Terms of Roles Every man has a number of roles that, in total, merge into his life story.Roles might include things like a husband, father, son, employee, volunteer, and money manager. When we see life in terms of our various roles, it is easier to determine how effective our life balance is.Planning your time with an emphasis on balancing the many roles you have can become a big part of finding that elusive ideal of work-life balance. Set Effective Boundaries With the ever-increasing pervasiveness of technology in our lives, it can be hard to distinguish between work time, family time and personal time.In many families, handheld devices have come to dominate family time.Setting some boundaries for the use of technology can be really helpful in finding greater balance. One family I know has a shelf near the front door where all smartphones are placed for the time between arriving home and the end o f the family dinner. This allows family members to interact and talk without the distractions of text messages and phone calls. Once dinner is over - and until bedtime - the devices can be on and used. Make Time for You Many men suffer from empty bucket syndrome. The feel like they are constantly asked to give more and more of themselves and have less and less personal time that allows them to fill their own buckets.Men can benefit from having a self-care and personal development plan that helps them eat smarter, integrate exercise into their schedules, read and study on personal improvement topics, and making time to refresh their relationships with things like weekly date nights and periodic retreats. Create a Personal Morning Routine Part of the bucket-filling effort for many men includes a daily morning bung. One of the best known morning ritual programs is called The Miracle Morning, taken after the title of a book by Hal Elrod. The Miracle Morning suggests an ideal routine of getting up an hour before the rest of the family is up and engaging in 6 daily practices - silence (meditation or prayer), affirmations, visualizations, exercise, reading, and journaling. Many men have found The Miracle Morning or other morning routine efforts to be a great way to build themselves and to not neglect the importance of their own personal development. Plan Times Weekly and Schedule Them Many men plan time on Sundays to create and schedule their week, balancing their work appointments and schedule with the schedule of the family and programming in needed time for appropriate balance. Getting the family on the same scheduling page and then including family activities on Dads work calendar can help keep all of the important items in their place. Multitask With the Family Multitasking is widely recognized as a failed concept.Granted, it can be hard to prepare a work report while talking on the phone and sitting at a soccer game. But there are some activities fath ers can do where two activities can blend together. For example, if you are needing some exercise, take one of the kids with you on a walk.If you need to run to the hardware store, load one of the kids in the car and talk while you drive.Look for opportunities to do tasks in which you can involve your family members. Use Rituals When you Get Home Many dads work to create a coming home ritual so that when they walk through the door at home, work gets left behind. One dad commented that he listens to his favorite music in the car on the way home so that when he pulls in the driveway, he is relaxed and ready to interact with the kids.Another dad has a large oak tree outside of his front door and on the way in from the car after work, he touches a low branch of the tree where he figuratively leaves his work problems on the branch. The following morning as he leaves for work, he touches the branch again and takes up his work mindset again. Rituals that help with work-life balance are im portant and can make a difference in how we interact when we get home. Evaluate Your Progress with the Family There is no better way to assess the time and attention you give to your family than to ask them.Try at least monthly to spend time with the family and ask some questions about whether they feel loved, supported and appreciated.Assess as a family how the entire family is doing with work-life balance and family relationships. It may be painful on occasion, but feedback is good and changes can be made when you know how you are doing.

The pros and cons of abruptly quitting like Vontae Davis

The pros and cons of abruptly quitting like Vontae DavisThe pros and cons of abruptly quitting like Vontae DavisOn Sunday, Buffalo Bills cornerback Vontae Davis fulfilled a dream of unhappy workers everywhere by abruptly quitting from his job during the middle of a game. When the Bills were down by 28-6 at halftime to the Los Angeles Chargers, the 10-year veteran and former first-round pick made the unusual move of not only pulling himself out of the game, but retiring from the NFL entirely. After the game, Davis released a lengthy, measured statement explaining that his choice, though sudden, had been a long time coming This isnt how I pictured retiring from the NFL, he said. Citing multiple surgeries and injuries he had endured, Davis said that on Sunday, he realized his body had taken enough Today on the field, reality hit me fast and hard I shouldnt be out there anymore. The abrupt exit stunned and angered his team, who were still playing, providing lessons on what to do when a job becomes untenable and you feel like you need to get out - now.Con Your team will not take it wellQuitting without giving any notice will always be a shock to certain disappointed colleagues. It may even lead to arguments that you are disrespecting them by bailing out and putting your needs above theirs.By quitting during a game that the Bills were losing, his actions were seen as un-sportsmanlike by some of his teammates. Its just completely disrespectful to his teammates He didnt say nothing to nobody I found out going into the second half of the game, Buffalo linebackerLorenzo Alexander said. They said hes not coming out, he retired. Thats it.Others also gave Davis nachrichten a chilly reception. Days after the game, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermot said that he has yet to speak to Davis about his retirement.I didnt feel a need. Im focused on my team right now, he said. The implication being Davis does not deserve the respect of me acknowledging his choice and years of se rvice to my sport.Pro You leave on your own termsDisappointing your trusted colleagues never feels great, but if you are able to weather their grumpy reactions, you may find, as Davis did, that there is a freedom in choosing yourself first. For Davis, his concern about the safety of the game had outweighed the personal growth he was getting out of it.Calling the decision overwhelming, Davis said that he had a moment on the field where he realized the physical toll the sport had taken on him, asking himself, Do I want to keep sacrificing? He continued And truthfully, I do not because the season is long, and its more important for me and my family to walk away healthy than to willfully embrace the warrior mentality and limp away too late. Many players limp away too late. There is an increasing awareness of the connection between football concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. In an examination of the brains of 111 NFL players, all but one had the degenerative disease. Davis t houghtful response shows that he was particularly aware of the health sacrifices he was making, and was going to prioritize himself. This was an overwhelming decision, but Im at peace with myself and my family, Davis concluded. Too often, ego and pride keeps workers in jobs long past when they should leave. As organizational behavior professor Jeffrey Pfeffer has toldLadders, employers often prey upon employees egos to get them to stay if you were really good at your job, they say, you would stick it out. It takes strength to shake off these toxic messages of warrior mentalities and face your own needs head-on.Because despite what colleagues may pressure you to believe, only you can know you need to leave a job that is not valuing your health. And sometimes, that wake-up call happens in the middle of a football game.

Why People Didnt Accept Your LinkedIn Request - The Muse

Why People Didnt Accept Your LinkedIn Request - The MuseWhy People Didnt Accept Your LinkedIn Request Not long ago, I had a visceral reaction when I read about how Muse writer Kat Boogaard accepted over 300 random LinkedIn requests. It reinforced my stance that Id only accept them when they were accompanied by a short note. No really, including a note as to why we should connect makes it so much easier to say yes. (And if you have no idea what to say in that note, here are a few templates.) Why else would I turn you down? Here are a few mora reasons1. You Asked for Way Too Much Right Off the BatThe fact that I write career advice articles for a living is proof that I really enjoy helping people. Even with two jobs, I get a rush out of giving someone a resume, cover letter, or interview tip that might help them land their next job. However, when people ask me for more in-depth consultations pro-bono, Im reminded of the time I reached out to a writer I admired and essentially begged hi m to help me break into the world of sports journalism. At the time, I couldnt comprehend why he ignored me. But after being on the other side of the fence a handful of times, I understand that as much as people want to help, they have the same number of hours as the rest of us. So, start small. Ask to connect first. And after that, keep up with that person you admire occasionally by liking statuses and weighing in with comments when it makes sense. This will make it less surprising when you ask for things like job tips, referrals, and introductions to other thought leaders.2. You Tried to Connect in Too Many Places, Too FastThere are a lot of stories about people connecting with complete strangers who they admire on LinkedIn. Im all for this if you can pull it off. And if you do it with a bit of tact, it can be mutually beneficial for you and the person youre reaching out to. In fact, if you want some tips on how to do it, check out this article. But Ive also had a few experiences in which these strangers took things a bit too far. In some cases, Im talking about people following up with an aggressive email asking why I hadnt accepted instantly. In others, people have tweeted at me to try and convince me to connect ASAP.Is perseverance admirable? Sometimes. But in fruchtwein cases, its best to let things breathe before you check in again, especially when youre dealing with someone who has no idea who you are. More often than not, a thoughtful message will lead to a connection- even if it takes the person a few days to see it.3. You Spelled My Name WrongYes, even though my name is literally on my profile, people spell it wrong. And yes, I do expect you to proofread, even if youre doing this on your phone. So double (and triple-check) the next time you reach out. Of course, this wont guarantee that theyll accept. But itll at least keep you from annoying them and never getting accepted.4. Your Message Was a Little Too PersonalWhen a request comes with a short, p ersonalized message, I tend to accept- even if Ive never met the person in real life. For example, this is usually a hitHi Rich,Im a huge fan of your work/recent project. You really inspired me to something that you did because you look up to this person. Id love to connect on LinkedInSincerely,YouHowever, in the past, Ive received super long messages that while flattering, make me a little nervous to leave my apartment (half-kidding). Sure, maybe you can find a lot of information across various platforms out there. But if you combine everything you can possibly learn from all my social media profiles into one message, it crosses the line, and truthfully makes me a little hesitant to accept. LinkedIn can be a powerful tool that allows you to interact with people youd otherwise never meet. But if youre not careful about how you approach them, you could end up costing yourself some valuable relationships. Im not saying to avoid trying- no really, try Im saying that you should just use common sense when youre doing it.

Career Paths Arent Always Straight and Narrow, and thats Okay!

Career Paths Arent Always Straight and Narrow, and thats Okay Many job counselors and coaches present the ideal career path as one that leads from A to B to C youre an intern, then an assistant, then a specialist, then a manager, etc. However, especially during the first few years of your career, you should be less concerned with crafting a step-by-step resume and more on being exposed to a variety of industries and experiences. Doing so can lead to an eclectic skill set that makes you valuable in a variety of fields and also allows you to figure out exactly what you want to do. So if you are feeling apprehensive about doing a little experimentation with your career path, here are several reasons why doing so can lead to your perfect job fit. 1. While career experimentation follows a more jack of all trades, master of none philosophical approach, what you wont gain in deep experience in individual feels is replaced by the ability to understand multiple perspectives. Think about it. It can be extremely beneficial to be able to call on past skills from a variety of jobs should the need arise for particular experience. Through experiencing multiple perspectives, you gain the ability to relate to people from a diverse range of backgrounds, helping you build relationships with a wider array of clients and partners.Your assorted experiences also boost your abilities as a manager as you are likely to oversee a set of employees with a host of functions. And while you probably will not be an expert in any or all of the areas represented by your team, the basic knowledge youve gained will help you be a more effective manager able to more efficiently delegate work to the proper workers.2. A huge benefit to having such a wide range of occupational experience is that you gain the knowledge you need to discard career paths that dont suit you. This decision can often be reached after an in ternship, without even having to spend substantial time working in the field. This is especially true if you use the time to meet with people spanning the breadth of roles that are represented within the field.3. Regardless of industry or role, you inevitably learn skills that are common and necessary across a range of careers. Such skills include communication, managing people, and building client relationships, just to personenname a few. As you look for new experiences, pay attention for the signs that a job will help you build such transferable skills.4. Once you build up enough experience, you will begin to recognize general patterns by which organizations operate and be able to begin comparing industries in a way that allows you to start finding your preferences. Once you start pinpointing these preferences you can start noticing those companies and industries that play to them. When youve collected these experiences and decide it is time to settle down to a strict career path, you must then determine which experiences and aspects of your past work are most relevant to the new job you are after. Stick to relying on a few core functions in your resume construction and use them to showcase your skills on paper and in person. While you may find that your skills dont match up perfectly for the job you want, dont focus on your weaknesses and let your diverse experiences speak to your flexibility and adaptability. As you can see, having a non-linear career path is not a bad thing and gives you opportunities to experiment and learn things that you would never have encountered otherwise. Just remember to always bring your past lessons with you on new endeavors and keep learning and growing your value as a unique and eclectic worker.
